Learning About Personality Style

Everyone has degrees of expressiveness and assertiveness in the workplace. Being able to identify where you are on the scale and how your personality and body language are impacting those around you will help with navigating the workplace. Employees should consider their own personality and the personality style of others around them to contribute to a more positive work environment.

There are two dimensions to personality style: Assertiveness and Expressiveness. Assertiveness is the effort you make to influence or control the thoughts and actions of others, and expressiveness is the degree to which you control or express your emotions when relating to others. The combination of the two dimensions forms the four quadrants of four personality styles:

  • High assertiveness and low expressiveness: Direct
  • High assertiveness and high expressiveness: Spirited
  • Low assertiveness and high expressiveness: Considerate
  • Low assertiveness and low expressiveness: Systematic

Direct people are upfront and realistic; considerate people are thoughtful and compassionate; spirited people are energetic and enthusiastic; and systematic people are organized and logical.  

These four styles guide a person’s actions, decisions, and general life approach. Expressiveness and assertiveness are learned behaviors that we use as a means of coping with the demands and expectations placed upon us.

Why is assertiveness/expressiveness important? It shows people how their personality is and how they can use it to work with others. If someone knows their levels of assertiveness and expressiveness and whether they are more direct, spirited, considerate or systematic, they can use their personality style in everything they do. Participating in proactive growth discussions can directly benefit how you interact with those around you and how teams can better work together.
